We are so excited to unveil the new look of Kensington Brewing Co. - an updated design that reflects the character and charm of our home: Toronto’s historic Kensington Market.
In our experience when people think of Kensington Market they think community and food. The Market is a fascinating mix of people and businesses that can’t be found anywhere else in the City. With streets bustling with activity, lined with assorted vendors selling foods from around the world, you could quite literally enjoy a different cuisine every day for weeks. We’re passionate about making beer that complements this abundance of flavours, so that when a customer comes into our brewery with a basket of ingredients for that evening’s supper, we can confidently say “we have a beer for that”!
Our new can line-up creates a neighbourhood of shop fronts that recreates the feel of our market home - eclectic and colourful, but with a consistent design that customers will recognize. Each can features suggested food pairings and gives customers a taste of the chaotic fun The Market provides.
The retired packaging included a variety of independently designed labels that were inconsistent, and made it difficult for customers to recognize the brand. Though a change was needed you can’t give a brewery that was born in the back of a restaurant in Kensington Market, a modern, corporate identify. It would be inauthentic, and not what we are about.
Drew Shannon was the illustrator tasked with the challenge of developing labels that were effective but still maintained the grass roots character of the brewery:
“The illustrations for the can graphics were inspired by the market itself, it's colours and diversity, and also vintage illustrations of markets from around the world. Having the cans be illustrated market stalls strengthened one of KBC's core brand philosophies; "beer brewed to be enjoyed with food." This way we could suggest the pairing of different foods with each beer included right into the design of the can. “
With our production brewery opening soon @299 Augusta Avenue, it is the perfect time to ignite a new energy into the brand by returning to our market roots. Our new facility will increase the volume and variety of beer we can produce, and the retail space will allow us to interact with our customers and engage with the community we value so much.
